Project Scope –

The project involved a rear ground floor extension and a partial first floor extension, alongside a reconfiguration of the ground floor layout to create a new open-plan kitchen, dining and living space and an enlarged first floor bedroom.

Overview –

The client’s brief was to improve how the house functioned for everyday living by creating a spacious, social hub at the rear of the property while making better use of the existing internal layout.

At ground floor level, we moved the kitchen to the rear, allowing us to design a bright open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that connects directly to the garden and now acts as the central hub of the home.

Relocating the kitchen also allowed the front of the property to be reconfigured into a snug and a small home office, creating more flexible spaces for both relaxation and work.

At first floor level, a partial extension enlarged one of the bedrooms, creating a more comfortable and practical space with room for a desk area, wardrobes and a full bedroom layout.

A key challenge was the restricted site and ensuring the extensions did not impact neighbouring properties, particularly in terms of natural light. Through careful design and massing, the proposal provided the additional space the clients required while remaining sensitive to the surrounding homes, resulting in planning approval and a significantly improved layout for the family.
